SHENYANG July 4 – The 2007 "Good Luck Beijing" International Women's Football Tournament began at the Shenyang Olympic Stadium this evening, with China being pitted against Mexico. As a result, China clinched its second win at this tournament with 1-0, thanks to the only goal scored by Han Duan, and went into the final with 6 points. After the match, veteran player Pu Wei gave an interview to SOHO Sports.

China first played with Mexico at the 2004 Athens Olympics. That time, China forced a draw with Mexico, but was later eliminated in the group preliminaries. Pu Wei was one of the players on that team. In her words, the Mexican team has made great progress since Athens 2004.

Despite its win China had a tough time with its Mexican opponents, especially in the first half. “Though we had some advantages,” Pu Wei said, “we failed to score any goal.” She admitted that her team was not in its best form. "We still have some time before the World Cup and I hope we can improve ourselves and play better then," she added.

Before the China-Mexico game, Italy outplayed Thailand 5-0. As they scored one more goal than China against Thailand, they may meet China in the final. Speaking of China’s possible encounter with Italy, Pu Wei said, "I remember we have played with Italy. They were so aggressive that they showed a typical European style."

PU Wei thought that the final with Italy may be quite tough. “If we are to beat them,” she said,  "we have to focus on technical details, and in the meantime we also have to enforce our teamwork." (Zhand Liang, Jia Wenxiu)
